So far 115 solar-powered boreholes have been drilled in the Midlands and 77 fixed, just a few days before last Saturday’s final Zanu PF star rally in Shurugwi, President Mnangagwa said at the weekend.
The game-changing boreholes programme is to install a solar-powered borehole in each of the country’s 35 000 villages to transform the lives of rural people.
Besides the requirement to have a safe and convenient source of drinking and household water in every home, the programme allows each rural village to have market gardening and help set up rural industries.
The President’s vision is to turn the villages into fully-fledged business enterprises through use of boreholes.
Addressing ZANU PF’s final star rally in Shurugwi on Saturday, President Mnangagwa said the boreholes programme was rapidly changing people’s lives.
“The ZANU PF Government is also setting up rural industries in every province. Under the Presidential Borehole Drilling Programme, we are going to drill boreholes in each village.
“For instance, today, as we came here to Shurugwi, we brought many rigs…we drilled 115 boreholes and 77 have been fixed,” said the President.
The President said the Second Republic had also built several bridges in the Midlands.
“We have built several bridges, including rehabilitating Flex Bridge in Mberengwa, Gunguhwe in Gokwe and Nyamatiti in Mvuma (while the) Manhize Bridge is complete.
“We have built many classroom blocks and schools in many districts in our country, including Budiriro, Zvaugwe, Nyaradza and Nyamuroro in the district of Shurugwi. Under devolution, we have built clinics, small bridges and we have introduced e-passports, and there is no need to travel to Harare for passports anymore. You can apply for passports from your own area.”
Speaking at the rally, Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga said the vision that President Mnangagwa is implementing for the country will make Zimbabwe a great nation.
“In just over five years in office, our President has achieved many milestones.
“Our leader is a visionary man of action who is making Zimbabwe a shining beacon not only of SADC, but the whole continent of Africa,” he said.
In an interview, Mr Paul Tungwarara, chairperson of Prevail Group International, the company that is drilling the boreholes, said they are moving with speed to reach the 35 000 target of one for each village.
“Access to potable water for the ordinary people is one of the Second Republic’s major endeavours and we are moving at breakneck speed in doing our work.
“Our boreholes are also bringing convenience to the beneficiaries in that they come with tapped water instead of the old model bush pump borehole,” he said.
