12 Mercedes cars reduced to ashes

A DEVASTATING fire ravaged a business premises on Solomon Mujuru Road (Kirkman Road) in Tynwald, Harare last Friday, destroying 12 Mercedes Benz vehicles, lawn mowers and generators, among other  valuables.

The inferno also destroyed a 5 000-litre plastic tank at the premises, whose owner is believed to be in the car-breaking business.

Elsewhere, a veld fire occurred at Shamwari Farm in Mt Hampden, Harare, on Saturday resulting in the destruction of 10 hectares of maize.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the fire in Tynwald saw 12 Mercedes Benz vehicles, lawn mowers, generators, nine gum poles and a 5 000-litre plastic tank being burnt.

“Meanwhile, a 10-hectare maize field was burnt after veld fire spread at Shamwari Farm, Mt Hampden, Harare on June 1, 2024.” 

No further details were available yesterday on the cause of the fires. 

This comes at a time firefighters in Harare are battling an unprecedented surge in fires, with over 780 calls received so far this year.

In most cases, fires are attributed to careless practices, gas explosions and electrical faults.

Gas explosions are often caused by leaks or improper installations.
