Nelson Mujoni (23) of House Number 2634 in Dulibadzimu high density suburb in the border town pleaded not guilty to contravening a section of the Criminal Law (Reform and Codification) Act (rape). He was convicted by regional magistrate Mr Owen Tagu during a regional court on circuit sitting in Beitbridge.
He was sentenced to 18 years of which six years were conditionally suspended for five years.
The prosecutor, Mr Johannes Tlou, said sometime in July, Mujoni went to the complainant’s family house to visit his sister who stays at the same house as a tenant.
On arrival Mujoni went to his sister’s room where he found the complainant and his sister watching television.
Mujoni ordered his sister to vacate the room before he grabbed the girl by her hand and closed the door of the room.
Mujoni ordered the girl to remove her clothes and lie in bed after which he raped her once.
Soon after committing the offence, Mujoni threatened to assault the girl if she reported the matter to anyone before he left the room.
The girl did not report the matter to anyone until her uncle later discovered a note, which the complainant had written. The note contained details of what had transpired on the fateful day.
On being quizzed the girl admitted that she had been raped and a report was made to the police leading to Mujoni’s arrest.
