14 accident victims named

Five people died while 11 others were injured when a Toyota Granvia they were travelling in was involved in an accident along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Road on Monday.

Police have also released the names of the 11 people who died over the weekend in an accident along the Harare-Bulawayo highway.

The accident occurred near the 126km-peg after the driver of the vehicle which had 15 passengers on board failed to negotiate a curve.

Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said the vehicle veered off the road, overturned and landed on its wheels.

“Four passengers died on the spot and one died on admission to Mwenezi Government Hospital. Eleven others who were injured were referred to the hospital for treatment,” she said.

She said they have since identified two of the victims who are Fidelis Muridziwa (41) of Number 99 Neshuro Growth Point, Mwenezi and Samuel Sibanda (25) of village 17B, Chief Charumbira in Masvingo.

Snr Asst Comm Charamba said they are appealing to those with missing relatives to proceed to Mwenezi Government Hospital and identify the three bodies.

Meanwhile, police have released the names of the 11 victims of a fatal road accident which occurred on April 2 near the 303km peg along the Harare-Bulawayo Road.

The 11 people, eight of them relatives, were killed while 13 others were seriously injured when a kombi burst a tyre and collided head-on with a double cab vehicle.

Eight died on the spot, while three more died on admission to Gweru Provincial Hospital.

Eight of the deceased were inthe kombi travelling to Harare for a funeral while six members of the Zimbabwe Scout Team were aboard the Bulawayo-bound double cab.

The 11 are Isaiah Suwari (33) of Gweru, Grace Munjanja (44), Douglas Munjanja (49), Sheila Chipato (52), all of Zaka; Angel Mususa (58) of Bulawayo and Laiza Siwela (63) of Gwanda.

Others are Boyd Mbewe (41), Taurai Zulu (36), all of Redcliff; Emmanuel Clerk Chipato (61) of Lupane, Kudzayi Vutoyi (52) of Bulawayo and Cariet Budzi (23) of Gweru.
