148 people killed in road accidents

AT LEAST 148 people were killed while 669 others were injured in 2 723 road traffic accidents that were recorded between December 15 2022 and January 15 this year.

Of the 2 723 accidents, 108 of them were fatal.

During the same period last year 138 people died while 647 were injured in 2 741 accidents recorded.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi has since urged drivers to be cautious when travelling on the roads.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police implores drivers to be always cautious on the roads and strive to set an appropriate conduct on safety standards to safeguard lives. Above all, the motoring public is implored to exercise extreme caution on the roads during this rainy season as some roads are slippery and in bad state.

“Motorists should not cross flooded rivers and bridges to curb drowning incidences. On the other hand, public service vehicle operators are urged to adhere to speed limits on the country”s roads and stop engaging in highway races while competing for passengers,” he said.

He urged the public to report errant drivers on the roads at any nearest police station or contacting the national complaints desk on 0242 703631 or WhatsApp on 0712 800 197. 

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police will continue to enforce road rules and regulations without fear or favour,” Asst Comm Nyathi said.

Meanwhile, police in Rusape are appealing for information which may assist in investigating a hit and run road traffic accident in which a suspected mentally challenged woman was hit by an unknown motorist on Saturday at the 129 km peg along Harare–Mutare Road near Eagles Nest Business Centre in Headlands. 

The victim died on the spot, after sustaining head injuries and fractures on both legs.

Police in Kadoma are also appealing for information which may assist to identify a male adult who was found dead with bruises on the back and a deformed forehead on Saturday.

The man was found lying by the roadside along the Harare-Bulawayo Road at the 150km peg.

A KG Tel (KG18) cellphone which had no battery and sim card, US$7 and $4 529 cash were found in the left pocket of the jacket which the victim was wearing. 

The man’s body was taken to Kadoma Hospital mortuary for post mortem as investigations on the case continue.
