MORE than 15 000kg of meat were consumed by about 18 000 people during the Castle Lager National Braai Day held at the Old Hararians Sports Club in Harare on Saturday.

Dubbed the Castle Lager Ultimate Braai, the event was a resounding success with Mpilo Central Hospital set to get 7 566kg of meat as a donation from Delta Beverages. Harare Hospital will get the other half.

Following the successful braai last year where 12 680kg of meat were consumed, this year, event organisers, Delta Beverages set a 15 000kg target. They managed to surpass it as 15 132kg of pork, beef and chicken were consumed.

Said Delta Beverages marketing manager Patricia Murambinda: “We’re yet to set a date at which the meat will be handed over to both hospitals as we need to arrange the logistics with the health ministry first. We had said for every kilogramme of meat consumed, Castle Lager will donate an equivalent amount that will be shared equally by Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo and Harare Hospital.”

She said they were happy to have surpassed last year’s amount of meat that was consumed, describing the event as oversubscribed despite the chilly weather.

“The braai went very well and a lot of people came through. It all came together perfectly well as over 18 000 people came and barbequed while sipping on their favourite clear beer. We’re also glad that we surpassed last year’s 12 000kg,” said Murambinda.

Those who did not attend the braai in Harare have however, not been forgotten as Murambinda said they were planning to host braai parties across the country during the festive season to give people a feel of the National Braai Day celebrations.
