A Bulawayo man has been sentenced to an effective 15 months’ imprisonment after repeatedly assaulting his wife following domestic disputes.
Munyaradzi Chishanga (33), of Pelandaba suburb, appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Mr Jeconia Prince Ncube facing a charge of physical abuse.
He pleaded guilty to the offence and was initially sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment.
A further three months, which had been suspended last year following a similar conviction, were added after he
breached the conditions of suspension, bringing the effective jail term to 15 months.
In mitigation, Chishanga pleaded with the court to allow him the option of paying a fine, claiming that he was remorseful and would not repeat the offence.
In response, the magistrate noted that Chishanga had previously been afforded the option of a fine, with the three month sentence suspended on condition that he would not commit a similar offence.
However, the court heard that he went on to assault his wife again, resulting in the activation of the suspended sentence and the imposition of the effective 15 month imprisonment.
Prosecuting, Mr Tafara Dzimbanhete told the court that the accused is the husband of the complainant.
He said that on March 18, 2026, at around 3pm, the accused had a misunderstanding with his wife, Lungile Sibanda (21).
The court heard that following the dispute, Chishanga assaulted his wife several times with open hands and kicked her all over the body.
As a result of the assault, the complainant sustained injuries and was admitted to hospital for treatment, Mr Dzimbanhete said.
