MORE than 150 people have registered for tomorrow’s Zimpapers Cancer Power Walk in Bulawayo with more expected today.
The annual charity walk, a Zimpapers corporate social responsibility initiative starts at 6AM at Coghlan Primary School under the theme “Every Story Is Unique. Every Journey Matters” (#UnitedByUnique).
Organiser Mduduzi Moyo said the confirmed figure excludes schoolchildren and that registration was on yesterday and will continue today and even tomorrow morning when some fitness fanatics are expected to sign up.
“We are expecting an even bigger event than last year,” said Moyo.
Townsend, Eveline and Milton schools are among those taking part while Montrose has yet to confirm.
“Participation of students this time is quite huge,” he said.
The walk aims to raise awareness about cancer, promote health and wellness and show solid community support in the fight against cancer. It targets cancer fighters and survivors across Zimbabwe.
Proceeds will go to a cancer centre that looks after cancer patients and supports survivors.
Moyo said some corporates had joined the Zimpapers initiative as part of their social responsibility programmes.
He said the walk has continued to grow despite competition from other walks, including one held last Saturday and another on the same day.
“The space for walks is being crowded, but despite that we have huge growth and the confidence that the public has in Zimpapers,” he said.
Participants will pay $15 while children under 12 will enjoy free participation.
Each walker will get a T-shirt, cap and medal.
The route starts and ends at Coghlan Primary School passing along Leopold Takawira Avenue, 9th Avenue and Robert Mugabe Way and up straight to Holiday Inn.
Several water points will be set up along the route with the number still to be confirmed as donations come in.
Participants have been encouraged to arrive early because of the hot weather conditions that are being experienced these days.
After the walk, there will be a Zumba session and wellness talks from breast cancer surgeon Dr Magara of United Bulawayo Hospitals and Mpilo Hospital oncologist Dr Tatenda Chingonzo.
“People will walk, people will show their support for cancer fighters and survivors,” said Moyo.
