THE Ministry of Mines and Mining Development has pledged to avail $150 000 for the construction of an artisanal mining laboratory at the Zimbabwe School of Mines (ZSM).

Speaking on the sidelines of a graduation ceremony of 55 women miners at Inyathi Training Institution last week, ZSM chief executive officer Mr Dzingirai Tusai said newly appointed Mines Minister, Winston Chitando, made the pledge of $150 000 for the construction of the lab, which would be fully equipped.

“The Minister of Mines and Mining Development has pledged $150 000 for the construction of artisanal lab. The lab will be fully equipped to offer appropriate knowledge that would help students,” said Mr Tusai.

He also acknowledged that women have a huge role to play in the mining sector and urged more of them to venture into mining and contribute towards the mainstream economy. “Women must take up mining seriously because they have a huge role to play in order to change the norm that mining is designed for males only. They are supposed to venture into responsible mining and contribute profitably towards the mining sector,” he said.

ZSM has said it was planning to invest $275 000 in building a campus clinic to cater for its students and community. Mr Tusai said wellness was very important to them and a clinic would serve students who stay on campus, the staff as well the local community.
