HIS academic journey was punctuated by skipping other grades and at just sixteen a prodigious learner pupil from Progress Christian College in Gweru, Cosmos Nemutenzi has set a new academic benchmark by achieving an impressive 19 points in science subjects in the recently released Zimbabwe School Examination Council (Zimsec) Advanced Level results. Nemutenzi came out with As in Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical Mathematics, and a B in Pure Mathematics.
The young genius is now seeking a scholarship to further his studies and fulfill his dreams. So academically confident is the young whiz kid who says he wants to undertake Medicine and Law at once, subject to approval by universities.
He is no stranger to remarkable academic achievements and recognition as his intellectual prowess has been noticed throughout his educational journey, starting from primary school days. The young boy had the privilege of shaking hands with former late President Mugabe in 2017 at the Rainbow Towers during a Zimbabwe International Research Symposium.
Two years later, in 2019, as a Grade Seven learner, he shook hands with President Mnangagwa at the same venue after showcasing his innovative creation of a bouncing egg.
“I have always been interested in science and innovation since my tender age. In 2017 I had a chance to shake hands with former president Mugabe when I was in Grade Five when I came outstanding during the Zimbabwe International Research Symposium. Again in 2019 I shook hands with President Mnangagwa when I came first during a similar event,” he said.
In a bold move, he skipped both Form 1 and Form 3, encouraged by his brother who believed in his ability to excel in the Ordinary-Level examinations without attempting those grades. Nemutenzi aspires to study at Harvard University (USA), with a burning passion for the medical field. His ultimate goal is to establish a medical company in Zimbabwe, contributing to the advancement of healthcare in the country. Additionally, he has expressed an interest in studying law and hopes to pursue both fields simultaneously if given the opportunity.
“My wish is to study at Harvard University if I find a scholarship. I have a passion for the medical industry that tempts me to choose medicine as a programme. Again I’ve got an interest in Law, and if the University allows me I can take the two courses at once,” he said.
Nemutenzi has already applied for a Medicine degree programe at the University of Zambia. However, he faces the financial challenge of funding his education and therefore, he is appealing to well-wishers for assistance to secure a scholarship that would enable him to pursue higher education and unlock his full potential.
