ONLY 17 people paid at the turnstiles to watch the 2021-2022 Castle Lager Premiership season opener pitting Manica Diamonds and Whawha at Sakubva Stadium in Mutare yesterday.

The 17 make up the very few among a legion of football fans in the eastern border city who could not brave the exorbitant US$10 entry fee the Premier Soccer League is charging.

Manica Diamonds administrator Owen Sango confirmed that only 17 people paid to watch the match.

The game ended in a 4-0 routing of the visitors at the hands of the Gem Boys.

A Lloyd Katongomara hat-trick and Ticha Mabvura strike is all that Manica Diamonds needed to outsmart the Gweru-based prisons wardens.

In another league game, another team from the diamond-mining city Tenax suffered a humiliating 6-1 defeat at the hands of hosts FC Platinum at Mandava Stadium in Zvishavane on Saturday.
