A WOMAN from Mangwe has been jailed for 18 months for killing her newborn baby.
Lindinkosi Nkomo (22) of Makuzeze Village gave birth to a baby girl and threw the body in a Blair toilet after committing the crime. Nkomo was convicted on her own plea of guilty to infanticide by Plumtree magistrate, Mr Joshua Mawere. She was sentenced to 24 months imprisonment and six months were suspended on condition that she does not within the next five years commit a similar offence.
In mitigation, Nkomo said she resorted to killing her newborn baby as her lover had abandoned her. She said she did not have the means to fend for the baby.
Prosecuting, Mr Charles Nyatsine said Nkomo killed the baby on May 9.
“On 9 May around 11AM, Nkomo gave birth to a baby girl and she killed her. She wrapped the body in a piece of cloth and threw it in a toilet pit and didn’t tell anyone about the birth of the child.
“Police received a tip off that Nkomo had secretly given birth and killed the baby. Police attended the scene and after questioning her Nkomo led them to where she had dumped the body leading to her arrest. The baby’s body was recovered,” he said. — @DubeMatutu
