AT least 19 teams will compete at the Bulawayo Volleyball Association’s (BVA) two-day mid-season tournament which starts tomorrow at Raylton Sports Club tomorrow.

Railstars are the defending champions in the men’s category while ZRP Raiders were women’s winners in the last edition held in 2013.

As of yesterday evening, 11 men’s teams — Railstars, Spartans, Vipers (CBC), Unit Fairbridge, Elephants, Jessie Mine, ZRP Raiders, Lupane State University (LSU), Filabusi, Izihlobo and Bulawayo’s Under-20 team had confirmed their participation.

Six teams — Railstars, Spartans, Unit Fairbridge, LSU, Highlanders and Bulawayo’s Under-20 team — will battle it out in the women’s category.

The Under-20 teams are using the tournament to prepare for the Zimbabwe National Youth Games set for August 15-23 in Mutare.

The BVA vice-president responsible for technical affairs Tinasone Chalemetsa said they looked forward to competitive matches.

“It’s going to be a thrilling weekend full of fun, entertainment and competition as no team will be a pushover. Every club is upbeat about winning and the number of teams that have registered so far is testimony that clubs are interested in participating at the tournament,” said Chalemetsa.

He said he expected more teams to register before the tournament starts tomorrow.
