1O stolen vehicles recovered in blitz

AT least 10 vehicles, suspected to have been stolen and used as mushikashika, were recovered during an ongoing operation being conducted by the police in Harare.

The operation is targeting reckless driving and pirate taxis.

So far, more 1 050 arrests have been made and of these, 479 are pirate taxis.

The police are investigating circumstances surrounding the theft of the 10 pirate taxis.

 

In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrests.

“The ZRP reports that 1 050 arrests were effected in Harare as of July 22, 2025, during the current operation on pirate taxis and recklessness on the roads,” he said.

“Of these, 479 pirate taxis were impounded, of which 10 have been established to be stolen vehicles. The cases are now being investigated by CID Vehicle Theft Squad (VTS). Some of the pirate taxis are not even registered with CVR.

“At least 308 touts have also been arrested, some have been taken to court and remanded to July 31, 2025, while others paid deposit fines. Some of the touts are being screened for repeat offenders and action by the courts.”

Meanwhile, the ZRP is also looking for 551 traffic violators who sped off or escaped upon approaching police checkpoints.

“The vehicle registration numbers will be published soon. Let us promote road safety by observing the country’s road rules and regulations,” Comm Nyathi said.
