2 cops jailed for theft

stealing two batteries at a company he was manning.
The two had stolen the batteries.

Owen Mwainamo (26) and Blessing Munetsi (28) who are members of the ZRP constabulary based at Reinham had denied the assault charge when their trial started before Harare magistrate Mrs Victoria Mashamba.
But the prosecution had ample evidence to secure the conviction of the duo.

In sentencing the two on Thursday, Mrs Mashamba noted that the policemen took advantage of their positions and tortured the complainant Mr Elliot Gochera (53) who resides at Rainham Farm.
He is employed as a security guard by Wallezim Investments.

Prosecutor Ms Francisca Mukumbiri proved that on May 3 this year there was a break in at the complainant’s workplace and two batteries were stolen.
Mwanaimo was called to attend to the scene together with security guards who were on duty followed some footprints.

The prints belonged to Mwainamo and he wanted to cover his tracks after stealing the batteries.
His prints led to the complainant’s house. The complainant was not on duty on the day in question.

They handcuffed the complainant and took him to their police base where they assaulted him with fists and button sticks.
As a result, the complainant sustained serious injuries and was treated at Parirenyatwa Hospital.
