2 men jailed 20 years each for hacking albino woman to pieces

Durban — Two men were sentenced to 20 years each behind bars for their roles in the murder of an albino woman from Manguzi in northern KwaZulu-Natal in August. Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said Thandazile Mpunzi, 20, had been reported missing by her relatives. “A missing person inquiry was opened for investigation and the police and the community members worked around the clock searching for the victim without success,” he said.

Ten days later, investigators received a tip-off that led them to four men who, after intense questioning, guided officers to a shallow grave. “The body of a missing woman was found in pieces and it appeared that she was strangled and chopped into pieces before being buried in a shallow grave,” Zwane said.

On Thursday Mandla Mabuza, 19, and Lindokuhle Khumalo, 19, were sentenced at the Vryheid Regional Court for killing Mpunzi after pleading guilty to the crime. “Bhekukufa Gumede is still in custody as he denies the allegations levelled against him. Siyabonga Gwala was released by the court,” Zwane added. — Sapa
