An unlicensed commuter omnibus driver will spend the next two years in prison for driving a public vehicle with 40 passengers on board.
Sabastian Madhinga (37) of Unit J in Chitungwiza was employed by Assan Mtembo of 32198, Unit B in the same suburb as a driver. The court heard that last week, Madhinga was driving a 75-seater AVM bus plying the Chitungwiza-City Centre route when he was stopped by Sergeant Chimota of Highway Patrol along Seke Road.

Sgt Chimota was carrying out traffic enforcements along the road when he asked Madhinga to produce his driver’s licence and he failed, leading to his arrest and the impounding of the bus.

A check with the  Central Vehicle Registry was conducted and it was established that Madhinga did not have a driver’s licence.

Appearing before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo, Madhinga admitted to contravening the Road Traffic Act by driving
without a licence.

Mr Murendo sentenced him to three years in prison and set aside a year for five years.
