AT least 20 drivers are expected to compete in the Bulawayo Motoring Club organised Total Motor Racing event at Bulawayo Motorsport Park on Saturday.
The race is the penultimate event of the national championship before the venue, formerly known as Breedon Everard Race Course along Victoria Falls Road, plays host to the popular Three Hour Endurance race on December 9.
Leonora Young, a member of the Saturday race’s organising committee, said participants drawn from Bulawayo and Harare will compete for the Peter Parnell Trophy.
“Total Zimbabwe have come on board to partner us for the event and we are very excited about it. We will be running national races as well as handicap races for cars and bikes. Lots of entertainment for the whole family as there will also be a jumping castle and candy floss for the kids and full bar and catering.
“We will have a meet and greet session where competitors will take their vehicles to an area where the public gets to meet them and take photos,” Young said.
The national standing at the moment sees a tight competition in the Saloon C class between top ranked Mano Zevgolis and second-placed Mike Laing, both from Harare.
Bulawayo’s Calvin Rademeyer is second in the Saloon B championship whose leader is Hilton Harunavamwe from Harare.
“It promises to be a good variety of vehicles racing, such as one or two more Sports 2000, as well as perhaps a faster Craig Goby, having replaced his 8-valve Opel motor in his Sports 2000 to a 16-valve, in the Sports A class. Also in close competition is the Harare duo of Warren Thorne in first and Shaun Whyte in second in the Superbike category. It is likely that they will both be here to get the optimum number of points possible,” said Young.
Besides Total Zimbabwe, Young said they had also partnered with Road Angels for breakdowns, Auto Quip invitational handicap race sponsor, Daniels Generators, Guard Alert, Afdis and Delta Distributors, Fence Africa, Aquafa Pure Water and Halsted Builders Express to make Saturday’s event a success.
