JOHANNESBURG. — About 20 people were missing following a blast at the Rolfe pharmaceutical laboratory in Middelburg, Eastern Cape police said yesterday. “As far as we know, there are 20 people unaccounted for,” said police spokesperson Stefanie Smith. “We should take into consideration that those people could have possibly gone home or even been taken to hospital, so we are just trying to account for everyone who was supposed to be at work when the blast happened.”
Thirty five people were injured in the explosion at the pharmaceutical laboratory in Middelburg, police said.
“(The) people were treated for injuries (burn wounds) at the Wilhelm Stahl Hospital,” said police spokesperson Stefanie Smith.
It was believed an explosion at Rolfe Laboratories sparked a fire that resulted in the evacuation of the building.
She said rescuers were searching a part of the building that was badly damaged for people who might be trapped.
“A head-count is still in process by the company to determine who was on duty at the time of the explosion and to determine the casualties.” — Sapa.
