A 20-YEAR-OLD man from Fort Rixon in Matabeleland South province has been slapped with an effective 20-year jail sentence after he robbed and attempted to kill two men from Nikas 6 Mine.

Bongani Hadebe appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Joseph Mabeza facing charges of attempted murder and robbery.

He pleaded not guilty to the crimes but was found guilty after a full trial and sentenced.

While handing down the sentence, the magistrate said the crimes were committed under aggravating circumstances.

“The offences of robbery and attempted murder are on the rise and hence the courts have to deter the like-minded to preserve lives and protect the society,” he said.

The court heard that on 5 June 2023 at around 1am, Hadebe approached Jabulani Sibanda’s tent and assaulted him with an axe butt. He then ordered him to surrender his money and cellphone and he complied.

Hadebe continued assaulting Sibanda while he was screaming. These screams were heard by Brighton Moyo who then woke up from his tent and went out to check on Sibanda.

While Moyo was approaching Sibanda’s tent, he met up with Hadebe who assaulted him with an axe butt twice on the head and his accomplice Mxolani Majolo who is still at large assaulted Moyo once on his left hand with an unknown object.

Sibanda managed to escape, but sustained two cuts on the head and one cut on the left palm. The matter was reported to the police leading to Hadebe’s arrest.
