Electricity tariffs go up 31pc next Tuesday
Lloyd Gumbo Herald Reporter
ELECTRICITY rises 31 percent next Tuesday to an average of 9,83 US cents a unit after the Government finally accepted a decision by the Zimbabwe Electricity Regulatory Commission.
The increase, made after extensive consultations, is designed to make Zesa, the sole distributor of power in Zimbabwe, profitable and able to fund its expansion.
A similar rise approved by the regulator in February was suspended by the Government until there had been more consultation, a condition now met and hence the Government’s approval.
The average tariff was set at 7,53USc a kilowatt hour in 2009 soon after the switch to multiple currencies and has remained constant since.
