Violence mars Zambia elections

LUSAKA – Rioting erupted yesterday during voting in the Zambian capital after opposition candidate Mr Michael Sata accused his rivals of attempting to rig a tight contest with President Rupiah Banda.
Violence broke out in a slum outside Lusaka as supporters of Mr Sata’s Patriotic Front claimed they found a man carrying pre-marked ballot papers in a box at a polling station in the densely-populated district of Kanyama.
“We searched and found that they were ballot papers, and so we started beating him,” said Francis Mwansa, one of the PF supporters.
The man, identified as Abel Muwowo, was arrested and taken to Kanyama Police Station.
The incident sparked a riot, with President Banda’s

Mayor’s Chicago trip flops, yields 5 000 pairs shoes

GMB bosses in grain, cash scams

Felex Share Herald Reporter
SOME Grain Marketing Board officials are reportedly working with syndicates buying maize from villagers and promptly paying their proxies at the expense of poor farmers.
Farmers, mainly from Mashonaland Central Province, are now accusing the officials of exploiting them and giving payment preference to the syndicates.
Given that the bulk of maize bought for a song from farmers is delivered to GMB depots, this has created payment backlog,  with farmers alleging the GMB officials were behind the payment delays.
Investigations showed that officials within GMB have agents who move around buying maize from farmers at prices ranging between US$150 and US$185 per tonne.
