EU responds to sanctions challenge

THE European Union has sent a brief response to the Government after Harare gave it an ultimatum to justify the sanctions the grouping imposed on Zimbabwe. The deadline for  the EU to respond was yesterday.

A source close to the matter yesterday said the EU’s failure to adequately explain itself meant the 27-member bloc had no legal and factual basis for imposing the embargo.
“The letter by the EU is a brief four paragraph response, which basically admits that it has no legal and factual basis that would constitute a statement of reasons for the designation of people and companies listed on the sanctions list.
