Parents walk out in protest over levies increase

THERE was drama at Milton Junior Primary School in Bulawayo on Wednesday evening when scores of parents walked out of a meeting in protest over proposed levy increases.

The meeting, which was organised by the School Development Committee (SDC) to discuss the proposed increases, started at around 5pm and ended around 9pm.
Parents who spoke to Chronicle on condition of anonymity yesterday accused the SDC of effecting increases without their consent.

“We are not amused by the manner in which we are treated at this school. We cannot have levies increased willy-nilly without our consent.

City’s supply dams record 2pc inflows

BULAWAYO’S water supply dams have recorded two percent inflows since the beginning of the rain season two months ago, raising fears of future water shortages.

According to the council’s latest report, only two of the city’s five supply dams — Inyankuni, Lower Ncema, Upper Ncema, Umzingwane and Insiza Mayfair — are more than 50 percent   full.
As of end of November 2011, Insiza Mayfair and Lower Ncema dams had more water storage at 87,2 percent and 56 percent respectively.

Inyankuni had 21,3 percent followed by Upper Ncema at 17 percent and Umzingwane at 12,3 percent.

No decision made yet on fate of 26 Congolese

THE Department of Immigration is investigating the status of the 26 Congolese who include 16 minors, who reportedly entered Zimbabwe illegally from Zambia.

The Assistant Regional Immigration Officer for Southern Region, Mr Francis Mabika, told Chronicle in a telephone interview from Harare yesterday that the way forward would depend on the outcome of the investigations.

“We were advised of their presence and we do not have any records of them in Zimbabwe,” said Mr Mabika.

“We are still investigating who they are and how they came into the country. We will only decide what to do once we establish their status.”
