Parties pessimistic on EU sanctions removal

The European Union might not remove the illegal sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe when the 27-member bloc meets in Brussels next month to review its stance on the embargoes, parties in the inclusive Government hinted yesterday.
Although Zanu-PF and MDC-T were unanimous that the embargoes would be extended to February 2014, the reasons the two parties gave were miles apart.
Zanu-PF argued the sanctions would not be removed as long as Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai was not in power, while the MDC-T claims they would remain in place as long as Global Political Agreement issues were not fully implemented.
Teachers rule out strike

Teachers will report for duty as normal when schools re-open next week despite concerns about this year’s salary increases, representatives of teachers’ unions said yesterday.
Schools open for the first term on 8 January.
“For now schools will open as scheduled without our disgruntled members going on strike over salary issues.
“We are waiting anxiously to see Government coming up with a very good package for the teachers before our membership embark on an industrial action later in January,” said the Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association secretary-general, Mr Richard Gundani.
In his budget statement, Finance Minister Tendai Biti said the Government would award civil servants an inflation-based salary increment this year.
