Government repossesses excess Zimplats land

GOVERNMENT has repossessed 27 948 hectares of excess ground containing platinum reserves held by Zimplats that will be allocated to new investors as part of measures to ensure increased mining acitvities.
Mines and Mining Development Minister Obert Mpofu said yesterday that other mining companies across the entire sector would also have excess land repossessed by the Government.
Apart from repossessing excess ground held by mining companies, Government would ban the export of semi-processed platinum in two years to compel platinum mining companies to set up a refinery in the country.
Addressing journalists in Harare, Minister Mpofu said the repossessed Zimplats mining ground would attract at least five new big investors.
He said Zimplats was granted a Special Mining Lease in 1994 to cover 25 years of mining activity, but new geological information indicated that the ground and mineral exceeded the prescribed period.Kenya holds first-ever presidential debate

NRZ salaries row sucks in employees’ wives

THE salary row pitting National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) and its employees has sucked in the workers’ wives who tried to stage a demonstration yesterday protesting the non-payment of full salaries to their husbands.
NRZ employees have gone for almost 11 months without full salaries.
More than 60 women were blocked by riot police while staging a demonstration at the Bulawayo Railway Station, in protest over salaries owed to their husbands.
The women demanded to know when their spouses would be paid.
“We have suffered for too long and life has become unbearable back home, as children do not have school fees and as such they cannot go to school.
“It pains me to see them at home every day and I am afraid that they might drop out of school forever if my husband is not paid,” said one woman.
