Church omnibus overturns after hitting pedestrian, one feared dead, 15 injured in Bulawayo

A church omnibus belonging to Kingdom Empowerment Centre overturned after reportedly hitting a pedestrian along a Bulawayo road on Sunday afternoon, leaving 15 people seriously injured and one person feared dead.

The accident occurred as the omnibus was travelling towards the city centre along 12th Avenue near Bulawayo Athletic Club.

Bulawayo Chief Fire Officer Mr Mhlangano Moyo said emergency services responded swiftly to the scene.

“It’s a church omnibus belonging to Kingdom Empowerment Centre heading to the city. It hit a pedestrian and overturned. Fifteen persons were seriously injured with various fractures and lacerations and were conveyed to hospital by Bulawayo Fire and Ambulance Services and Highway Emergency Services. One person is suspected to have been dead on arrival,” said Mr Moyo.

He said emergency personnel worked to secure the accident scene and ensure the safety of other road users.

“The motor vehicle and roadway were rendered safe by the Brigade,” said Mr Moyo.

The identities of the injured and the deceased had not been released by the time of publication.

Police were expected to conduct investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
