‘2014, here we come’

A New Day is a privilege to us so we can start afresh, and forget about the worries of yesterday, take the advantage of a new day and make the best out of it, never let your past destroy what comes of tomorrow. The biggest question on everyone’s lips is: A new year seems like a pretty good time to contemplate what is going to happen over the next 365 days (gosh it is not a leap year).

Let’s face it; we all want good things to happen to us and we know for a fact that some good things will happen in this year.

If you are thinking about the year 2013 and saying to yourself, “It’s just going to be the same thing, day-in and day-out, like it was last year”.

Well, that’s not going to fly with you because if you don’t think anything good will happen to you this year, I challenge you to think otherwise.

Yes, there are things we can control and things we cannot control but it sure seems like it’s the unpleasant circumstances not within our control that grab hold of our attention and won’t let go.

It is all too easy to get demoralised, depressed and worn down by the stuff we can’t do a darn thing about.

Here is the thing. If you spend your time trying to fix the things that are unfixable, you are going to be a very unhappy camper.

On the other hand, if you switch your focus onto the things you can control, you will start feeling better about yourself and your life.

Nothing is more empowering than reclaiming your potential and doing everything you can do to better your situation in life in spite of your health problems.

Below are five simple steps and make this the year your New Year’s resolutions last through December

1. Pick a goal that excites you

The biggest mistake people make is picking the wrong goal in the first place.

Never set goals that are over a year old, because they’re “dead”.

2. Create a master plan

Determine what you actually need to do to achieve your goals — that’s your master plan.

Maybe you’ll have to wake up an hour earlier to read your notes, or start exercising and cut on your diet.

3. Keep your eye on the ball

This allows you to check into them often, make adjustments, and check goals off your list.

You should always know where you are going. Vision boards, maps, lists and pictures that embody success will keep you motivated.

And, visualising how you’ll feel after achieving your goal unleashes the power of your subconscious mind—which further propels you towards success.

4. Reward yourself

To stay focused and motivated for the long haul, celebrate your successes. For example, “I reward myself monthly with a movie,” said Anesu Takawira (16).

Secret is if you reward yourself with something that makes you feel beautiful each time, you’re more likely to achieve your end goal.

5. Stay focused

Remember you made resolutions so stick to them if you have direction.
