FOR more than two decades, Bulawayo’s nightlife has echoed with the signature touch of one man, DJ Mzoe. The celebrated deck master, born Sibanengi Mzotshe Ndebele, remains one of Bulawayo’s most influential figures behind the decks, spinning his way across almost every major club in Bulawayo and its surroundings over a remarkable 23-year career.
Now, the veteran DJ is once again in the spotlight after earning a nomination for Outstanding Club DJ at the forthcoming Bulawayo Arts Awards.
In an interview, the DJ said: “I’m happy and excited to be nominated. It feels great to be recognised in this way. If
I’m to win it, I’ll be excited as this will mean that people still love what I do.”
DJ Mzoe first won the BAA in 2021, a recognition he says still motivates him to push his craft further. He believes platforms like the BAAs play an essential role in uplifting creatives.
“It also gives us that extra push to be head above shoulders,” he said.
What sets DJ Mzoe apart is not just his versatility behind the turntables but his commitment to fellow creatives. During the Covid-19 lockdown, when the entertainment industry was crippled, he created Twist Sessions, an online platform designed to keep local DJs active and visible. The show became a lifeline for many artistes and a source of entertainment for fans confined to their homes.
“During the lockdown I wanted to make sure DJs remained relevant hence why I came up with that initiative,” he said.

The sessions helped sustain the city’s party culture at a time when nightlife had come to a standstill.
His passion for empowerment has also shaped his work as an entrepreneur. Through his company, Fudu Media, Mzoe has branched into filming, photography, event production and sound equipment hire, using his brand to open opportunities for others. In 2023, he launched the Fudu Festival, a platform designed to celebrate DJs and promote emerging talent in Bulawayo.
Asked how he has managed to remain relevant for over two decades, DJ Mzoe said adaptability has been key. “I try by all means to move with time and do what’s relevant at that time so that I’m not left behind.”
He has watched the DJ scene evolve, from equipment to audience behaviour. “From when I started to now, people really used to party all night. But nowadays, people are now living the moment. Even in terms of equipment, things have changed big time.”
To keep his sets fresh, he relies on awareness and instinct.
“Well, the ear must always be on the ground, because that’s where everything trending is.”
Mzoe also attributes his longevity to having a distinctive style that crowds instantly recognise.
“I have my own unique style of mixing that has become my signature, that people identify with and relate to,” he said.
With deejaying becoming increasingly crowded, DJ Mzoe believes innovation is the only way for DJs to stand out.
“People need to be creative so that they can be recognised, that’s the only way to remain relevant.”
He also thinks collaboration is essential for growth.

“Local DJs need to open up so that they learn what’s happening outside,” he said. From club residencies to digital innovation, youth empowerment and business ventures, DJ Mzoe has grown into more than just a DJ, he is a cultural contributor and industry driver. Being nominated again is meaningful, he says, but what excites him most is the future. He is working on new projects and expanding Fudu Media to greater heights.
