A suspect accused of raping a 13-year-old Grade 7 student in a parked commuter omnibus at Rezende rank in July has been arrested and brought to court.

Givemore Mutape (25) appeared before Harare regional magistrate Mrs Marehwanazvo Gofa, last week, facing rape charges.

He was advised to apply for bail at the High Court and is set to return to court on October 13.

According to Prosecutor Mr Lancelot Mutsokoti, the incident occurred on July 19 at around 1 pm.

The girl left home for the central business district in Harare to collect money for extra lessons from her stepfather.

After collecting the money from her stepfather’s workplace, she made her way to the commuter omnibus rank along Julia Zvobgo Street (formerly Rezende Street) to get transport to go home.

While intending to board a commuter omnibus to Marlborough, touts began obstructing her from getting onto the vehicle.

Mutape allegedly approached the girl under the guise of helping her and directed her to board a white commuter omnibus that was parked nearby.

The victim complied and sat alone in the back seat. It is alleged that Mutape followed her and raped her once without using protection in the vehicle.
