250 Starlink kits to boost councils operations

In a significant step towards bridging the digital divide, the Government has donated 250 Starlink satellite connectivity kits to the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works.

Speaking at the sensitisation workshop for unpacking minimum service delivery standards, State land management policy, launch of the MSDS dashboard and handover of Starlink kits; Minister of Information Communication Technology (ICT), Postal and Courier Services, Tatenda Mavetera said the donation is a testament to the Government’s commitment to embracing innovative solutions and driving digital transformation.

“This donation represents far more than just advanced technology. It embodies our unwavering commitment under the vision and leadership of President Mnangagwa, to ensure local authorities remain united in the digital age,” she said.

The Starlink kits will be deployed across the country’s local authorities, revolutionising service delivery, enhancing administrative efficiency, improving disaster response and planning, empowering communities, and fostering economic development.

“The 250 Starlink kits placed in the hands of the local authorities will be transformative for their revolutionised service delivery.”

Minister Mavetera credited the President for unlocking the potential for truly universal connectivity, particularly in areas where terrestrial infrastructure remains a challenge.

“His personal approval for the licensing of new satellite technology in Zimbabwe has been a watershed moment for us,” she said.

The ceremony also highlighted the importance of collaboration and partnerships in driving digital transformation.

“We understand that seamless service delivery, effective governance and national development hinge on breaking down silos and working collaboratively.”

As the nation embarks on this digital journey, the Government pledged to remain steadfast in its mission to drive Zimbabwe’s digital transformation.

“We will continue to actively support all MDAs so that we embrace connectivity and harness the power of the digital age,” she said.

Minister Mavetera concluded with a promise to deploy artificial intelligence training to local government authorities, ensuring they are well-prepared for the AI revolution.

“We really want to say we are ready to also deploy artificial intelligence training to all of you so that at least we will be braced up for AI, for the AI revolution.”
