AT least 28 people have been arrested in Mbare, Kuwadzana and Dzivaresekwa after they were found in possession of, and smoking dangerous drugs, including dagga and stilpane.
Police also recovered various illegal drugs, following the arrest of the suspects, who are still assisting police with investigations.
National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the arrests yesterday.
“Police in Harare arrested 28 people for illegal possession of dangerous drugs and smoking dagga in Mbare, Kuwadzana and Dzivaresekwa,” he said.
“The arrest led to the recovery of 18×100 ml Stilpane syrup and 20 sachets of dagga.”
Asst Comm Nyathi said police would continue carrying out such raids and warned those dealing in illegal drugs that they will be arrested and prosecuted.
“The ZRP has intensified operation ‘No to Crystal Meth’ and all drug peddlers are emphatically warned that they risk being arrested.”
The arrests come after reports that the abuse of “mutoriro”, also known as “dombo” or “guka”, by youths, had reached alarming levels.
Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister, Kazembe Kazembe, said drug cartels and individuals peddling drugs in Zimbabwe or using the country as a transit point, will be hunted down. Police are also conducting drug abuse awareness campaigns countrywide with a view to save the masses from the devastating effects of the dangerous substances.
