28 killed in Iraq violence, air strikes

BAGHDAD. — A total of 28 people were killed in Iraq yesterday during the violence inflicted by the Islamic State (IS) and the air strikes against the terror group, official and security sources said. In Iraq’s northern province of Nineveh, more than 20 people were killed and some 30 others wounded in the morning air strikes by the US-led coalition against buildings believed to be IS headquarters in the eastern part of the provincial capital city of Mosul, some 400km of Baghdad, an official from the security committee of Nineveh’s provincial council told Xinhua.

One of the air strikes targeted a meeting of IS leaders at a building, leaving a number of them killed.
Separately, IS firing squad executed six women, including the two prominent physicians, Maha Sabhan and Lamia Ismail, late on Wednesday night after they brought them to a public place in the militant-seized city of Mosul, a provincial police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The reason behind the execution is not clear yet, but IS militants had repeatedly carried out executions against women in the city, including female politicians, activists and physicians.
The security situation began to drastically deteriorate in Iraq since June 10, when bloody clashes broke out between Iraqi security forces and hundreds of IS militants. — Xinhua
