by director of the programme and Manicaland provincial Governor Cde Christopher Mushohwe.
Addressing the students in Harare yesterday, Cde Mushohwe said the programme did not receive enough money from the Ministry of Finance this year. The programme received US$3 million instead of US$54 million.
“We didn’t receive enough money from the Ministry of Finance and that is why we didn’t take many students.
“So many students apply for the programme, but only a few manage to get scholarships. Apply your mind and you will be able to pass with distinctions.”
Cde Mushohwe said the students were supposed to work for their country for three years after graduation. The Presidential Scholarship Programme was initiated in 1995 to provide deserving students university education.
Each year, the programme, whose patron is President Mugabe, draws students from each district from the country’s 10 provinces.
Some of the students will study at such universities as Wits University, University of Pretoria, Cape Town University and Rhodes.
