At least 29 people drowned countrywide in separate incidents while they were engaging in activities such as swimming, fishing, performing rituals, and bathing.
The cases were reported between June and August this year. National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi disclosed the statistics in a statement.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is concerned about drowning incidents recorded throughout the country,” he said.
“The police received 29 cases of drowning between June and August 2024. Some of these cases occurred while victims were engaging in activities such as swimming, casting fishing nets, participating in Manjuzu rituals and bathing.”.
On July 7, 2024, a drowning incident was recorded by the police in Domboshava where someone drowned while performing rituals commonly known as manjuzu at Garimo River, Chinamhora.
In another drowning incident that occurred on August 20, 2024, at Harzel Dine Farm Dam in Karoi, a victim drowned while casting nets.
Another person drowned while swimming in Chilonga River in Kamativi, on August 28, 2024.
“As the country braces for the summer and rainy season members of the public are urged to take heed of safety and precautionary measures when they approach water bodies to safeguard lives,” Comm Nyathi said.
