THE construction of a $2,5 million Shurugwi Town mall is expected to commence on October 10 when the contractor Inductoserve Property Development and Rentals will present a construction plan to Shurugwi Town Council.
The project failed to take off over the past three years after Inductoserve invested heavily on the refurbishment of Golden Mile Hotel, which was recently re-launched by Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Shurugwi Town Council signed a public-private investment deal in 2013 with the South African based construction company with operations in Zimbabwe, for the building of the three-storey shopping mall, which is set to change the face of the mining town.
A letter in possession of Business Chronicle addressed to Shurugwi Town Council secretary Mr Solomon Siziba by Inductoserve director Mr Solomon Matsa reiterates the latter’s desire to commence construction work.
“This letter serves to inform you that real construction of the mall will commence on the 10th of October 2016.
“We will commence with the end where your bar and toilets are positioned. We will submit the construction plan by the 10th of October 2016,” read part of the letter dated September 26 this year.
The initial timeframe for the completion of the project is between nine to 12 months.
In April the contractor carried some preparatory work for the construction of the mall when a landscaping exercise of the site was undertaken.
The new project in Shurugwi Town comes as Anglo-Plats’ Unki Mines’ $80 million housing project for its workforce is nearing completion.
Infrastructural developments in Shurugwi have in the past been attributed mainly to the presence of ailing ferrochrome processor, Zimasco which owns the major amenities in the mining town.
However, viability challenges Zimasco has resulted in the company going under judicial management and handed over most amenities such as schools, hospitals and clinics among others to the town council.
