Nearly 600 tents were set up in south Turkey’s Hatay province to accommodate the refugees, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported.
Around 6 000 blankets and 3 000 beds, as well as mobile kitchens, bathrooms and toilets, were sent to the region while injured Syrians were being treated at nearby hospitals, the report said.
Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority had allocated 750 000 Turkish lira (about US$475 000) to the Hatay Governor’s Office to meet the needs of the refugees, the report quoted officials as saying.
Turkish President Abdullah Gul said Friday that Turkey closely monitored the latest developments in Syria and was prepared for the worst scenarios.
“Turkey has taken measures for all possible developments. We follow the process with great sorrow,” the president said.
The refugees were living in camps built by Turkey’s Red Crescent Aid Society in Yayladagi, Altinozu and Boynuyogun towns of Hatay, according to Anatolia.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday that Turkey would not “close its doors” to Syrians fleeing the unrest in their country, while urging Damascus to “change its attitude towards civilians” and “take its attitude to a more tolerant level as soon as possible.” – Xinhua.
