Moleen Machingura Harare Bureau—
THREE people died on the spot and 19 others were injured when a Harare-bound City Link bus collided head-on with a Nissan UD truck along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway yesterday. The accident occurred around 2.30PM and killed the bus driver, his co-driver and the truck driver. Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said in a statement that the bus tried to drive through smoke that had engulfed the road.
“Drivers should not drive through such dangerous conditions,” she said. “If not sure, they should park their vehicles until the smoke subsides.
“Police are appealing to all drivers to consider the safety of their passengers and vehicles whenever they come across clouds of smoke on the road.”
When our Harare Bureau arrived at the scene, six of the injured had already been taken to Norton General Hospital, while the other 13 were ferried to Parirenyatwa Hospital.
The City of Harare Fire Brigade was on the scene.
Bodies of the deceased were taken to a Harare funeral parlour.
One passenger who was not seriously injured said: “I panicked after the accident when I realised that my one-year two-month-old baby was missing and I thought he had died. I found him outside the bus and I just thanked God for saving our lives.”
City Link manager Gerald Matapure conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families.
“It is sad that lives were lost due to the accident,” he said. “As a company, we are going to assist in the burial of all the deceased.”
Names of the deceased are being withheld until their next of kin are informed.
