3 pedestrians killed in hit, run accidents

THREE pedestrians were killed by hit-and-run drivers last weekend, triggering police manhunts for the offending drivers.

Drivers involved in an accident must, by law, stop and render whatever assistance they can. Frequently, the courts find that racing away after an accident is more serious than the actual accident, and hit-and-run drivers are generally jailed even if the pedestrian was at fault.

In an interview, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said police were concerned with such cases and are appealing to the public with information that might assist them to track down the errant drivers.

Over the weekend, three men aged between 38 and 50 were killed while another one was injured in separate hit-and-run road accidents in Harare and Mutare.

On Sunday along High Glen Road, Glen Norah, a man aged 38 was killed after being hit by an unknown motorist who did not stop after the accident.

Also on Sunday, a man aged 50 died on the spot after being hit by an unknown motorist at the intersection of Makumbe Drive and Solomon Mujuru Road (formerly Kirkman Road) in Mabelreign, at around 11.40pm.

A third male pedestrian was hit at around 6.30pm on Tuesday at the intersection of Robert Mugabe Road and Fifth Street in Harare.

The man aged about 38 was hit by an unknown motorist and sustained a broken leg and swollen forehead.

The motorist did not stop and the victim succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.

Going back into the records, Commissioner Nyathi noted that police in Harare were investigating another fatal hit and run fatal traffic accident at Market Square Rank on July 3 at around 7pm.

A male pedestrian was hit by a yet to be identified kombi. The driver did not stop. The victim sustained a fracture and bruises on his head and was taken to Sally Mugabe Hospital where he died on admission,” Comm Nyathi said.

Police are also investigating another fatal hit and run road traffic accident which occurred on June 30 at 12.55am hours along 14th Street in Glen View Area 8.

An unknown motorist hit a yet to be identified man and did not stop after the accident. The victim died on the spot.

Meanwhile, police in Bulawayo are investigating a serious hit and run road traffic accident which occurred on June 8 along Rangemore Road in Nkulumane.

A motorist who was driving a yet to be identified vehicle hit a pedestrian aged 85 who was walking along the road.

Another serious hit and run road traffic accident also occurred on June 8, 2024 along Nketa Drive, Nkulumane in Bulawayo where a motorist collided with a motorcyclist and did not stop.

As a result, the rider fell on the ground and sustained head injuries.

He is in hospital in Bulawayo.

Police in Mutare are also investigating a serious hit and run accident that  occurred along Mutare-Chimanimani Road, Sakubva on Monday at around 5pm whena man aged 47 was hit by an unknown motorist and sustained a swollen hand.

The driver did not stop.

The victim was taken to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital for treatment.

Police are appealing to anyone with information that might assist them to investigate the cases.
