30-minute savoury beef and onion stir-fry

Looking for a quick, delicious meal for the family?

THIS sumptuous beef and onion stir-fry requires only 30 minutes of preparation and cooking time. It is a perfect weeknight dinner that serves four.

Ingredients

One kilogramme beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain;

Two large onions, sliced into wedges;

Two tablespoons soy sauce;

One tablespoon oyster sauce;

One tablespoon cornstarch;

One teaspoon sugar;

Half teaspoon black pepper;

Two cloves garlic, minced;

One teaspoon fresh ginger, minced;

Two tablespoons vegetable oil;

Quarter cup beef broth (or water);

One teaspoon sesame oil ;

Green onions, sliced for garnish

Method

  1. In a bowl, combine the sliced beef with the soy sauce, oyster sauce, cornstarch, sugar and black pepper. Mix well and let it marinate for 10 to 15 minutes.
  2. Heat one tablespoon of vegetable oil in a wok or large skillet over high heat. Add the marinated beef in a single layer and stir-fry for two to three minutes until browned but not fully cooked. Remove the beef from the pan and set aside.
  3. In the same pan, add the remaining tablespoon of oil. Add the garlic and ginger, stir-frying for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Add the sliced onions and cook for three to four minutes until they begin to soften and slightly caramelise.
  4. Return the beef to the pan and pour in the beef broth or water. Stir everything together and cook for another two to three minutes until the beef is tender and the sauce has thickened.
  5. Drizzle with sesame oil if using it. Garnish with sliced green onions and serve hot over a bed of steamed rice or noodles.
