30-YEAR-OLD MAN ARRESTED FOR ALLEGED RAPE OF 95-YEAR-OLD GRANDMOTHER IN LIMPOPO

A 30-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a 95-year-old woman in Vleeisboom village, within the Hlogotlou policing area in Limpopo’s Sekhukhune District, the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed on Saturday.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba says the incident occurred on Friday night, January 9, 2026, at about 10pm, when the elderly woman was at her home preparing food.

“It is alleged that in the evening, the elderly victim was busy preparing food for herself at her home when she was surprised by the suspect inside her house,” said Mashaba.

The man was reportedly armed with a knife.

Police allege that the suspect assaulted the victim, gagged her and raped her before fleeing the scene.

A case of rape was immediately opened at the Hlogotlou Police Station, prompting an urgent investigation. Through what police described as diligent investigative work, officers traced and arrested the suspect on Saturday night, January 10, 2026.

Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Limpopo, Major General Jan Scheepers, condemned the alleged crime in the strongest terms and praised the swift response by investigators.

“The arrest of this suspect demonstrates our unwavering commitment to bringing perpetrators of gender-based violence to justice, particularly those who prey on our most vulnerable community members,” Scheepers said.

“The brutality displayed against a 95-year-old woman is utterly reprehensible and will not be tolerated in our province.”

He added, “I commend the investigating team for their swift action in apprehending the suspect. We will ensure that this case receives the attention it deserves as it proceeds through the criminal justice system.”

The suspect is expected to appear before the Nebo Magistrate’s Court on a charge of rape. Police said investigations are continuing. — IOL News.
