300 000 vehicles licensed so far

Queues that marked the last few days of the May 31 deadline, the initial deadline, disappeared following the extension of the deadline to Saturday. This raises suspicions that the majority of vehicles in the country may not have been legally imported.
Transport, Communications and Infrastructural Development Minister Nicholas Goche has already indicated that the deadline will not be extended. Zinara spokesperson, Mr Augustine Moyo yesterday said the new registration system will help the authorities know how many vehicles were in the country.
“As of today we have licensed 300 000 vehicles and that is inclusive of small vehicles, haulage trucks and trailers,” Mr Moyo said.
“It is not yet clear how many vehicles are in the country but from our side everything was in place and there are no more queues of people at the registration centres. We believe this new computerised system will help us know how many vehicles are in Zimbabwe because at the moment there is no accurate figure of how many vehicles are in the country.”
Mr Moyo said for the vehicles that were grounded, it was prudent for the owners to make sure they get the exemption certificates. But the exempted vehicles, he said, were not supposed to be driven on public roads. Mr Moyo said Zinara had also partnered CBZ Bank to issue vehicle licenses.
“We are not replacing Zimpost but complementing it for the convenience of the motoring public because the bank has vibrant information and communication technology infrastructure and a wide coverage.
He said initially the CBZ Harare and Bulawayo branches are the ones that will be offering the service while other branches will come in later.
