ABOUT 300 delegates are expected at the first national elective conference of a new recreational body, the Zimbabwe Displays, Wellness, Recreation Education and Sport for All Association (ZDWERESA) in Kwekwe from November 30 to December 3.
ZDWERESA’s objective is to promote and develop recreational activities such as mass displays, drum majorettes, boy scouts, girl guides and aerobics, among others. Delegates will be drawn from schools, colleges, community clubs and recreational groups from the country’s 10 provinces. The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) is expected to preside over the ZDWERESA elective congress where an executive committee will be voted into office.
“The SRC has given ZDWERESA temporary recognition for a period of six months during which the new body must regularise and formalise its existence as a fully pledged National Sport and Recreation Association,” said SRC acting director general Joseph Muchechetere.
“We applaud the new body for taking the initiative to regularise recreational activities as envisaged in the new curriculum. Recreation is bigger than sport, but if not properly organised and formalised, it doesn’t have the capacity to reach all corners of the country. It’s our hope that ZDWERESA will fill that gap and take activities such as drum majorettes and boys scouts to all corners.”
Muchechetere said some of ZDWERESA’s objectives will be to set up community clubs throughout the country.
“In line with government’s vision of an active populace to fight non-communicable diseases through wellness and keeping fit, the new body is expected to set up community clubs across the country. Each province is expected to send at least 30 delegates to the inaugural national elective conference,” he said.
