OVER 300 villagers in Shurugwi received free medical services from doctors and nurses based in Gweru, who are consolidating the work being undertaken by First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa through her charity organisation — Angels of Hope Foundation.
Angels of Hope Foundation’s main focus is to uplift the lives of disadvantaged children and other vulnerable members of society.
Over 30 doctors and nurses offered free medical attention to villagers, who thronged Zvamabande District Hospital in Shurugwi on Wednesday.
Programme coordinator Mr Alfred Makara said they had come up with the programme to offer free medical assistance to marginalised people.
He said people were also being screened for cancer, through the Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid and Camera (VIAC) and receiving HIV counselling and testing.
“We are taking a leaf from the good work that is being done by (the First Lady) Amai Mnangagwa and we thought of coming together as health professionals to offer free medical services to the people in Shurugwi and Dorset and we are planning to take the programme across the province,” he said.
Mr Makara said Midlands Private Hospital provided an ambulance and 28 nurses, who assisted doctors that participated in the program- me.
He said Gweru now had many specialists following the opening of a medical school at the Midlands State University.
“I just want to thank everyone who participated in the programme for making it a success and we hope it will continue to be a success,” said Mr Makara.
“For a start we want to do the visits once in three months and we will be reviewing the period to once in two months or monthly.”
Mr Makara said they were planning to take the programme to Zvishavane and Chiwundura.
