A total of 32 babies were delivered on New Year’s Day in Bulawayo’s major hospitals; Mpilo Central Hospital and United Bulawayo Hospitals.

Of the total babies, 14 are girls while 18 are boys.

Mpilo public relations officer Sister Norma Mabhena said the biggest of the babies weighed 3,5 kg while the smallest weighed 2,7kg.

“We had a total of 13 deliveries on Monday and we got bouncing baby boys and girls who are doing well so far. Of the total, 10 were boys while three were girls,” said Sr Mabhena.

“All the babies and their mothers are in good health and we are hoping to continue giving residents quality healthcare services as we start the New Year,” she said.

A total of 19 babies were delivered at UBH on New Year’s Day.

UBH acting public relations officer Matron Nhlanhla Maphosa said of the 19 babies delivered, 10 were girls and nine were boys.

She said both the babies and mothers were doing well.

“We had a total of 19 deliveries on New Year at UBH and we are happy to announce that all went well, our babies and mothers are doing well.

One of the ecstatic mothers, Ms Sithule Ndlovu, said she delivered a baby at Mpilo at a few minutes after midnight on Monday.

“This is my third child and I am happy that I didn’t develop any complications during delivery. My baby came around 1AM and he is a perfect 2024 gift from above.

“I managed to hold him thereafter and I am grateful to the staff at Mpilo for helping me deliver my baby,” she said.

Statistics from the council-run maternity centres and private health institutions could not be obtained by the time of going to Press.

Of those who were blessed with bundles of joy was Ms Fidress Ncube, the widow of the late Insimbi ZeZhwane co-founder, Elvis “MaEli” Mathe, who welcomed a bouncing baby girl at Tsholotsho Hospital on Monday evening.

This is their second child after their three-year-old son Mfakazi Mathe.

Ms Coddelia Ncube, the District Sports, Recreation, Arts, and Culture officer in Tsholotsho, confirmed the news, saying that the delivery went smoothly.

“MaEli’s wife has just given birth to a baby girl. The delivery went well,” she shared.

Last month, a heart-warming celebration was held in Tsholotsho, where friends and family gathered for a joyous baby shower.

Ms Ncube expressed her gratitude for the well-organised baby shower.

“I would like to thank everyone for everything that has been done and for the big celebration of my baby. People enjoyed themselves and I appreciate all the work that went into making the baby shower a success.”
