Paul Mundandi in Zvishavane
THIRTY-SIX teams took part in the Johnso Football and Netball tournament at Mabasa Secondary School in the Zvishavane-Runde constituency at the weekend. The tournament was sponsored to the tune of $2,000 by Mangwe-based Zvishavane man Johnson Sibanda. Pias lifted the Jonso football trophy and took home $500 after edging Mabasa United 1-0 in the final, while Mazhou pocketed $100 after beating Chimhini 13-10 in the netball final. All teams that finished in the top five also got cash prizes.
Sibanda said he came up with the tournament as a way of encouraging fitness among the young and elderly as well as helping develop sport in his home constituency.
“My objective is to keep young and old people occupied. If youths get occupied, they’ll not have time to do drugs and indulge in other immorality. This will keep HIV down and I’m glad that we’re achieving this,” said Sibanda.
“It’ll also give youths time to interact with their elders in a manner that brings development as appropriate knowledge will be imparted to the youths. We’ve discovered a number of players in these tournaments and we’re creating employment in line with the national economic blueprint Zim-Asset,” said Sibanda.
FC Platinum left-back Raymond Sibanda was plucked from the rural set up of Mabasa during one of these tournaments.
