THIRTY-EIGHT people died while 70 others were injured in 283 road accidents recorded countrywide since last Friday.
The accidents recorded between last Friday and Tuesday have been attributed to speeding, overtaking errors, unlicensed drivers, negligent pedestrians and an increase in the volume of traffic, among other causes.
In an interview, chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said during the Heroes’ and Defence Forces holidays, 17 people died while 63 others were injured in 87 accidents.
She said during the same period last year, seven people died while 43 were injured in 83 accidents.
“Between Monday and Tuesday, 17 people died while 63 others were injured in 87 accidents recorded. We would like to urge motorists to continue exercising caution when travelling on the country’s major roads,” Snr Asst Comm Charamba said.
She reiterated the need for motorists to observe road rules and regulations as well as giving consideration to other road users.
On Monday, three people died while nine others were seriously injured when a vehicle they were travelling in side-swiped another vehicle and overturned along the Chartsworth-Bhasera Road.
The Toyota Noah vehicle, which had 12 passengers on board including the driver, side-swiped a Mazda truck and overturned before landing on its roof killing three people on the spot.
The accident occurred at the 65km peg along the Bhasera road.
On Monday police said they had intensified their visibility through roadblocks, a traffic blitz and carrying out awareness campaigns.
Last year, a total of 24 people died while 129 others were injured in 237 accidents recorded during the Heroes’ and Defence Forces holidays.
