FOUR children aged two, four, five and six and a teenager have drowned in separate incidents countrywide, with police warning parents not to leave small children alone and for adults to recognise and avoid the dangers.
One of the four children and the 19-year-old man drowned in Jotsholo, while two children drowned in Mberengwa and the other child in Gwelutshena.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said on Thursday last week, Mthulisi Nhlalo Ndlovu, aged five, of St George Village, Chief Mabhikwa, Jotsholo, drowned in a two-metre deep well when his guardians left him alone at home.
On Friday, Donald Gwezuva (6) and Praymore Shoko (4) of Chidanhika Village, Chief Mapiravana, Mberengwa, drowned in a pool 1,5m deep.
Their parents had left the children at home while attending a local meeting.
On Saturday, the body of Resistance Mhlanga (19) of Banda Village, Chief Mabhikwa, Jotsholo, was retrieved.
He drowned while trying to cross the Gwayi River, which is now in flood.
On Thursday, a two-year-old drowned in a shallow well at Wakufa Village, Gwelutshena, while playing alone.
The mother later checked on the child only to find the lifeless body submerged in water and legs stuck in the mud.
Police have urged parents and guardians to always ensure the safety and security of their children.
This comes after a two-year-old child succumbed to hot water burns which he sustained in Sibangani Village 2, Lupane on Thursday when another child aged five tried to remove a tin of boiling water from the stove.
The 37-year-old mother of the children had left them alone when she went to the family’s garden.
