Four Zimbabweans have been nominated for consideration to the senior leadership of the African Union Commission.
Those nominated are Dr John Basera, Ms Rofina Tsingo, Dr George Manyaya and Dr Agnes Mahomva.
Dr Basera has been nominated for Commissioner of Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Development where he will slug it out with five others, while Ms Tsingo will battle it out with seven others for the position of Commissioner of Economic Development, Trade, Tourism, Industry and Minerals.
Dr Basera is Permanent Secretary for Local Government and Public Works while Dr Mahomva is Public Health Advisor to the President and Cabinet.
Dr Manyaya, who is general manager (stakeholder relations) at Zesa Holdings, will fight it out with three others from South Africa, Mozambique and Cameroon for the position of Commissioner of Infrastructure and Energy.
Dr Mahomva will battle six other contenders from Southern and West Africa for the post of Commissioner of Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development.
In a statement yesterday, the AU Commission confirmed that the nomination process for its senior leadership had officially closed and no further submissions will be accepted.
“The Commission also acknowledges receipt of the attached list of nominations received before the deadline.
“The submissions will be forwarded to the high-level panel of eminent Africans to initiate the assessment process for the positions of the six Commissioners.
“The panel, assisted by an independent African firm, will first conduct an initial review of applications and CVs, and then shortlisted candidates will be invited for further assessment based on the skills and competency criteria established for the leadership posts,” reads the statement.
It added that the process will generate a ranked pool of pre-qualified candidates nominated by the relevant AU regions from which Commissioners shall be elected and appointed.
