At least 42 people died while several others were injured when a bus they were travelling in was involved in an accident near Makhado town in South Africa on Sunday evening.

Although official figures are yet to be released by the Department of Transport and Community Safety, reports from South African media indicate that 42 people were confirmed dead on the scene.

In a statement on Monday, Limpopo’s Department of Transport and Community Safety said the bus was travelling from Port Elizabeth to Harare.

The accident occurred near Ingwe lodge along the N1 Highway.

“A major accident involving a bus occurred on the N1 road, and MEC Violet Mathye is rushing to the scene. The road has been closed,” said the department.

“We encourage travellers to use alternative routes from Makhado to Musina. They may use the Witvlag turn-off and from Musina to Makhado, they should use the Williespoort turn-off.

“Motorists are advised to exercise caution and follow traffic updates. Our thoughts are with those affected by this accident. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.”

The N1 is a major commercial road linking South Africa with the rest of Sadc countries north of the Limpopo.
